Alabama Driver License for Tax Return Filing Requirements
Alabama started requiring driver license info on their individual return filings a few years ago in an effort to reduce fraudulent filings. At first this was greeted with some complaints and raised eyebrows due to the additional data needed as well as privacy concerns. However, reports indicate that fraudulent tax refunds at the Alabama level have decreased. Between the time saved and increased security, this could be classified as a win for Alabama.
The info required can be found on three spots on the card: 1) License number 2) Issuance Date 3) Expiration Date.
On more than occasion I've helped remind a taxpayer about an upcoming expiration!
But what do you do if you don't have an Alabama driver license or similar ID? Many older taxpayers may not have an ID. This doesn't mean you can't e-file - you just have to use the standard 'mock' info that ALDOR provides:
Driver License #: 7777777Driver Licenses State: ALIssue Date: 11/1/2011Expiration Date: 11/1/2019
As filing season continues along, seemingly not too terribly impacted at the federal level by the government shutdown, don't let your state return be delayed by incorrect driver license info, or a lack of one causing paper-filing.
