Tax Home Alabama: Trim your Taxes for your Tailgate this Weekend
Various too-early preseason rankings are already out for the 2018 season of college football, and I've only seen one that doesn't have Alabama at the top spot (bold move, Sports Illustrated). Meanwhile, Auburn falls somewhere between 5th and 7th, while Georgia and Clemson take turns filling out the top 3. If you are wanting to plan ahead and ramp up your tailgating gear, this coming weekend may be an ideal opportunity. While the Alabama Department of Revenue dubbed it the Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, a savvy tailgater will recognize several opportunities to save as well.
Looking at the list of sales-tax-exempt items for the weekend, it's striking how the needs of a kit for tornado or hurricane season mirror so closely to the needs of a tailgate. While you won't need a NOAA weather radio to listen Saturday football, other items include:
- Phone batteries and chargers
- Plastic sheeting/drop cloths
- Ground anchor system (bungee cords/rope/tie-down kits)
- Duct tape
- Can opener
- Self-contained first aid kit
- Portable generators and power cords
- (See the full list)
I've seen all of the above utilized during a tailgate, especially the duct tape and first aid kit. Especially if you'll feel the price hike from the loss of tax deductions for Iron Bowl and other college athletics tickets, stock up for the fall this weekend and avoid the sales tax!
